The excerpt in WordPress is space for a short summary of content for posts. It’s enabled by default – though you might need to click on Screen Options and click the Excerpt box to enable it.
Excerpts are also available to use for pages – but they’re not usually enabled by default.
But if you add this one line of code into your functions.php file, then you’ll be able to use excerpts in your pages as well:
add_post_type_support( ‘page’, ‘excerpt’ );
I found this very helpful recently when migrating Bankwatch’s website from Drupal to WordPress. Their old site on Drupal had used excerpts for pages extensively, and when I ran the migration, the excerpts were transferred to the WordPress database successfully, but could not be displayed on the new site until that line of code was added to the functions.php file.
